Description

A hand-painted angel pendant in Georgian minankari cloisonné enamel — a guardian angel worked in silver wire and kiln-fired glass, paired with a small enamel cross or flower charm below.

Why the angel is a hard shape to make

Faces and hands are where cloisonné gets difficult. Geometric ornament forgives a wobbling wire; a face does not. The maker bends fine silver wire into wings, robe and features, solders every cell shut, then fills each with ground glass and fires the whole piece — three or four times over, refilling as the glass sinks — before grinding the surface flat. A single misplaced cell in the face means starting again. That is why enamel angels take longer than almost anything else in the workshop, and why each one ends up with a slightly different expression.

Materials and wearing

Sterling silver with fired vitreous enamel. Real glass enamel holds its colour permanently; it does not fade in sunlight or discolour with age the way resin-filled pieces do. Pendant scale, on a standard bail. It hangs well on a short chain worn close to the throat or on a longer one over knitwear — and because the charm below adds a little movement, it reads as a necklace rather than a single flat disc.

Care

Enamel is durable but brittle at the edges. Avoid knocks against hard surfaces, take it off before sleeping and swimming, and clean with a dry soft cloth. Polish the silver alone, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner.

Who it’s for

This is the piece people buy for a new baby, a christening or a godchild, and equally for an adult going through something difficult — the protection symbolism carries either way without needing an explanation. It arrives gift-boxed, which makes it usable as a same-day present once it lands.

Questions

Is it suitable for a baby or small child?
As a keepsake, yes — most buyers give it to be kept and worn later. We would not put any pendant on an infant for daily wear, for the usual safety reasons rather than anything about this piece.

What is minankari, exactly?
The Georgian name for cloisonné enamel: silver wire cells filled with powdered glass and fired until the glass fuses. It has been practised in Georgia since around the 8th century.

How long to the US, and will customs charge me?
Made or sourced after you order, so most orders arrive in about two weeks with emailed tracking. Shipping is duties-paid (DDP) — duties are in the price and nothing is charged on delivery.

Buying for a christening? Many people pair this with the cloisonné cross necklace, or choose the enamel cross and heart necklace for an older child. More of the same craft in Enamel Jewelry.
